National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries in India |
|
Bandhavgarh
National Park : Bandhavgarh National Park is a small National Par,;
compact, yet full of game. The density of the tiger population at Bandhavgarh
is the highest known in India. This is also White Tiger country. Bandhavgarh
is densely populated with species: the great gaur, or Indian bison,
Sambar, Barking deer and Nilgai are to be seen in the more open areas
of the park.
Ranthambore National
Park : Ranthambhore National Park, A significant geological feature
within the park is the 'Great Boundary Fault' where the Vindhaya plateau
meets the Aravali range. The Rivers Chambal in the South and the Banas
in the North bound the National Park. The park is dotted with steep
rocky hills and the dominating architecture of Ranthambhor Fort (built
in the 10th century), adds to its landscape.
Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary
: Bharatpur, which is also called the Eastern gateway of Rajasthan,
was found by Maharaja Suraj mal in 1733 AD. This bird paradise acquired
its name – Keoladeo because of the existence of the Keoladeo temple
of Lord Shiva. After the name of this temple the lake is called ‘Ghana’
Keoladeo. Ghana being the vernacular synonym for dense forest. Corbett National Park
:
The Corbett park is first national park of India established in the
year 1936 it was named Hailey National Park. In 1957 ,the park was rechristned
as the Corbett National Park in the memory of Late Jim Corbett great
naturalist, eminent conservationist. It is 118 Kms. from Nainital via
Kaladhungi & Ramnagar. Sunderbans National
Park : A world heritage site, the mangrove forests of Sunderbans
spread across 4264 sq. kms of dense and wild foliage. It is here that
the river Ganges forms the world's largest delta to create a unique
estuarine forest whose fragile eco-system is supported by numerous rivers
and lakes that surround the area. Kaziranga National
Park : Kaziranga National Park is situated on the south bank of
the Brahmaputra river in Assam, India. Kaziranga National Park covers
an area of approximately 430 Sq. kms with its swamps and tall thickets
of elephant grass making it the ideal habitat for the Indian one-horned. Kanha National Park
: Kanha Tiger Reserve, comprising parts of the Mandla & Balaghat districts
of Madhya Pradesh, and located in the "Maikal" hills of the Satpuras,
is internationally renowned for its rich floral and faunal attributes.
The Reserve is an excellent interspersion of the Dadars (flat hill tops),
grassy expanses, dense forests and riverine forests. It is very rich
in flora, largely due to the combination of landforms and soil types,
apart from the moist character of the region. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
: Periyar is one of India's most picturesque reserves. A dam constructed
on the Periyar river led to the submersion of a large forest area and
the formation of a 55 sq km lake, which assured the local wildlife a
perennial source of water. This led to the rapid growth of the park.
The Periyar Lake with an area of 26 sq. km. is the nucleus of the Tiger
Reserve. Due to the diverticular shape, it caters to a much more extensive
area of forest than would be possible if it was merely a compact lake.
Sariska Wildlife
Sanctuary : Sariska in Rajasthan, located just 200 kms from Delhi,
is one of the closest National Parks to the capital. Sculpted out of
the Aravalli hills, it spreads over 800-sq kms and is home to the majestic
tiger, deer, Nilgai, partridges, wild boar, fox, gaur, sambar, chital,
hyena, and the four-horned antelope. Idukki Wildlife
Sanctuary : Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is located at a distance of
40 kms from Thodupuzha. This sanctuary extends over the Thodupuzha and
Udumpanchola taluks of Idukki district spreading over 77sq. kms, at
450 - 748m above sea level.
Manas Wildlife Sanctuary
: The Manas Wildlife Sanctuary, a Project Tiger reserve, lies among
the foothills of the Bhutan Himalayas, in the far eastern state of Assam.
The park, which spreads over 2,837 sq km, is a vast, relatively unspoilt
expanse of low-lying sal forests and grasslands.
Dandeli Wildlife
Sanctuary : The calm and peaceful Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary is
reputed as the largest wildlife sanctuary in Karnataka.Nestling some
very rare animal and birds is an unspoilt, untouched and unexplored
treasure of wildlife that is sure to leave you spellbound. Dandeli Wildlife
Sanctuary abounds with a richness of Flora and Fauna. Neyyar Wildlife
Sanctuary : The Neyyar reservoir is easily navigable and extends
9.06 sq. km. The vegetation varies from tropical wet evergreen to grasslands.
The Agasthyakoodam hill, 1890 metres high, lies in the premises of the
sanctuary. Elephants, gaur, sloth bear, Nilgiri tahr, jungle cat, wild
boar, Nilgiri langur etc. are seen.
Vallanadu Blackbuck
Sanctuary : The great diversity of flora and fauna in Vallanadu
Blackbuck Sanctuary is simply amazing. This dense scrub forest area
houses Spotted Deer, Macaques, Jungle cat, Mongoose, wild hares and
several other animals. The sanctuary was founded with the aim of protecting
and nurturing Blackbucks in the country. |
